Apollo's Fire performs J.S. Bach's St. John Passion
From its roiling opening chorus to its compelling conclusion, J.S. Bach’s acclaimed St. John Passion, BWV 244, chronicles the final days of Jesus.

This week: Described by The New York Times as a cellist who performs "with unforced simplicity and beauty of tone," Jeffrey Zeigler is joined by pianist Pedja Muzijevic in this performance including works by Ginastera, Beethoven, and Richard Wilson.

J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion is revered as one of the quintessential masterpieces of western classical music. Originally premiered on Good Friday in 1727, The Passion According to St. Matthew, BWV 244, is a dramatic integration of scripture, new poetry, and great hymns of the Lutheran tradition. Bach's sublime setting creates a portrayal of the Passion that is both profoundly human and divine.
