Music Education at Trinity
Trinity Church offers a robust slate of music education programs for young people, from kindergarteners just beginning to find their voices to recent college graduates seeking to enter the industry as professionals. Based in downtown Manhattan, our free, unique programs provide high-quality training, performance opportunities, and mentorship that accompany students from childhood into adulthood.
Trinity Youth Chorus
Currently celebrating its 20th season, Trinity Youth Chorus brings together talented youth ages 5 to 18 from the five boroughs of New York City. Choristers receive individual and group training in vocal technique, music theory, sight-reading, and performance skills from a group of dedicated professionals led by Melissa Attebury, Trinity’s Director of Music, and Peyton Marion, Assistant Director of Music Education and Outreach.
The choristers provide musical leadership for Sunday 9am Family services and offer concerts throughout the season, often performing with Trinity’s professional ensembles, including Trinity Choir.
Trinity Choral Scholars Program
The Trinity Choral Scholars Program helps young musicians navigate the murky waters between graduation and landing a professional job. The program embeds early career singers with Trinity Choir and St. Paul’s Chapel Choir, giving them a chance to develop their skills in a supportive setting. The goal is to find and train young musicians in the art of ensemble singing at the highest level, while also identifying new artists to add to the ranks of Trinity’s professional ensembles.
Trinity Choral Scholars perform with Trinity’s choirs during worship services and special events. It is a paid apprenticeship that lasts through the academic year.
JAZZ HOUSE KiDS
Trinity Church is educating the next generation of music-makers in jazz, America’s home-grown art form.
Through a collaboration with JAZZ HOUSE KiDS, a New Jersey-based community arts organization, we’ve created JAZZ HOUSE NYC, a free, rich, authentic, and robust jazz education program open to all Trinity Youth. Part of Trinity’s Afterschool program, the initiative expands access to free musical training and jazz education.
Our classes, which take place at Trinity Commons, introduce students to small and large group ensembles, improvisation, jazz vocals, and African drumming. Students can choose to study saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, piano or guitar. To reduce barriers, novice learners receive loaner instruments to kickstart their musical journeys.
Our annual college fair gives students interested in becoming professional musicians the tools and confidence they need to pursue their goals long after they leave JAZZ HOUSE classrooms.
