Ubuntu Circles

April 19–May 17, Trinity Commons and online

“I am because We are, and because We are, I am.” The interconnectedness of all beings is the essence of Ubuntu philosophy, which originates in Bantu-speaking Africa. Ubuntu theology was integral to the life and work of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, particularly in his campaign to end apartheid in South Africa.

Led by The Very Rev. Michael Battle—who served as chaplain to Archbishop Tutu and has written extensively about his life and legacy—this five session small group program will focus on what it means to be in beloved community with others by exploring the principles and practices of Ubuntu and how we exist within a web of human and divine relationships. Together, we will reflect on how racialization shapes our consciousness at both the internalized and interpersonal levels; and discover the creative ways that God, as Trinity, can deepen our understanding of one another, exploring the belief that God would not exist unless there were others to love.
