Trinity Church Wall Street Expands Food Programs to Serve 25 Locations Throughout New York City
Sites in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens offer grocery staples and meals for those facing food insecurity
NEW YORK, NY, November 24 – Trinity Church Wall Street announced today that it is expanding its food programs to reach 25 locations across New York City in response to the historic rates of food insecurity among city residents as a result of the pandemic.
The food programs consist of Compassion Meals, which are to-go meals available at 10 locations plus Trinity Church, and Compassion Markets, which provide prepackaged bags of shelf-stable groceries including rice, cereal, and fruits and vegetables, as well as personal hygiene kits, and are available at those 10 sites and an additional 15 locations, including St. Paul’s Chapel in lower Manhattan. Through these combined programs, Trinity expects to provide groceries and meals for more than 90,000 families across the city by year end.
“Before the COVID-19 crisis, over a million people in New York City were considered food insecure, and that figure is expected to soar by 38% by the end of this year,” said Lorelei A. Vargas, Executive Director of Trinity Commons. “At the same time, nearly 40% of food pantries and soup kitchens across the five boroughs have closed, and those that remain open are struggling to meet demand. The pandemic has not only increased the number of people who need help, but it has also exacerbated the challenges faced by those who were food insecure pre-pandemic.”
“Coupled with a 14% rise in unemployment since the start of the pandemic – which has disproportionately affected lower-income communities – food insecurity is a critical issue,” she said. “The expansion of our food program could not happen without the help of dozens of churches and organizations who have partnered with Trinity and share in the goal of caring for our neighbors across the city.”
Compassion Market locations include nine sites in the Bronx, four in Brooklyn, seven in Queens, and five in Manhattan, which will provide bags of groceries and hygiene kits twice per month.
Trinity's weekly Compassion Market operates out of St. Paul's Chapel (Broadway and Fulton St.) on Wednesdays from noon to 3pm. Those seeking to participate are asked to make a reservation using the Plentiful app, but walk-ins are welcome while supplies last. To-go meals also are available daily at Trinity Church (Broadway and Wall St.).
