New York's Oldest Holiday Tradition

On December 16, the 108th annual Clement Clarke Moore Candlelight Carol Service was held at the Church of the Intercession at 155th and Broadway. The service featured a reading of Moore’s famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Assemblymember Al Taylor, music by Adan Vasquez The Uptown Brass, The Institute of Special Education, St. Paul’s Choir School, and The Young People’s Chorus of Washington Heights. After the service, a wreath was laid at the grave of Moore in Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum. Moore, son of Bishop Benjamin Moore, Rector of Trinity Church from 1800-1816, was a devout Episcopalian and donated the land on which General Theological Seminary was built.
