Keeping Us Safe: The Facts on Bail Reform

New York’s new bail law, which went into effect and was quickly amended in 2020, has undoubtedly changed New Yorkers’ lives for the better. People who would have been in jail because they couldn’t afford bail went home to their families and their jobs while awaiting trial. Across the state, communities benefited from increased investment in supportive services, not incarceration. 

Moderated by New York Theological Seminary’s Dr. LaKeesha Walrond, New York State legislators including Assembly Member Latrice Walker talked about how the current bail laws work and the impact they are having. Guest speakers who are directly impacted by bail also shared their stories.
