’Twas the Night Before Christmas: A Reading
For more than 100 years, the Church of the Intercession in Washington Heights, formerly a Trinity chapel, has hosted a festive annual reading of A Visit from St. Nicholas, better known as ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. This year, the beloved poem will be read by the Rt. Rev. Matthew F. Heyd, Bishop of the Diocese of New York.
The reading will be followed by a lantern procession to the Trinity Cemetery and Mausoleum for a short service in memory of Clement Clarke Moore (1779–1863), author of the poem and son of the sixth Trinity Rector Benjamin Moore. In 1822, as a Christmas gift to his six children, Clement Clarke Moore wrote the poem that became a classic for all to cherish.
