Jesus came to us in tough circumstances, as a lovable but vulnerable baby. God’s love is with us both when it’s easy and when it’s hard to give or receive love.

The annunciation to Joseph reminds us that Christmas is disruptive. Jesus’s arrival in the world and in our lives destabilizes our plans for a perfectly planned life and asks us to accept the interruption of God into time — into the messiness of human life.

With children, we might just say that Advent liturgy and practice used to be a serious time to prepare ourselves for Jesus’s arrival in our hearts. However, even then, on the third Sunday of Advent, they took a break and celebrated along with Mary in her anticipation of her baby and of how he would help restore God’s kin-dom — on earth as it is in heaven.

Children can understand some of the harsh laws of nature between animal species, but it’s harder for them to understand why people treat one another as enemies. Though humans have dreamed of peace for thousands of years. What was it about the human leader Isaiah prophesied that made him believe that peace among all of creation was possible?

 After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Trinity Church Wall Street will once again host two performances of Handel’s Messiah this holiday season on December 9 and 10. Trinity's interpretation of the oratorio has been hailed by The New York Times as “the best Messiah in New York.”

And maybe being called into judgement is a call to see the world as it really is, in all its glory and pain, and to be given another chance to respond to it all with love.

We’re human beings and we all have gifts, skills, and tools that can be used to hurt or help, too. God is always with us to help us choose the ways of love and creation that the prophets envisioned.
