Epiphany Sermon, The Rev. Elizabeth Blunt: “The Light that Shines in the Darkness”

“The paths towards holy things often lead away from worldly power and privilege. The wise men left King Herod behind in every way. They let their eyes acclimate by night so that they could perceive the majesty they found in lowliness.” Preaching at Trinity on the Feast of the Epiphany, the Rev. Elizabeth Blunt reminds us that although “the glory of the Lord” is everywhere in the Scriptures –from the peak of Mount Sinai to the Jerusalem temple– this same light that we celebrate today “feels different.”

“This is not a fiery sun at dawn, or even a full moon that cast shadows on a dark night, this is starlight. It's gentle and subtle. It takes some perception, preparation, and patience to perceive it. It's beautiful instead of fearsome.” The readings are Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72: 1-7, 10-14; Ephesians 3: 1-12; and Matthew 2: 1-12.
