Trinity Quadruples Annual Charitable Activity Since 2019, to $61 Million
NEW YORK, February 1, 2024 – Trinity Church Wall Street announced today that its philanthropic efforts have expanded from $16 million in FY2019 to $61 million in FY2023, or almost 300 percent. The growth in Trinity’s philanthropy is driven by increased need within the community during years marked by the COVID-19 public health emergency, the rising cost of housing across New York, and a surge in asylum-seekers arriving in the city from other states.
Since 2022, Trinity has dedicated nearly $3 million in direct support to asylum-seekers and migrant families in urgent need through grantmaking to 22 community nonprofits and a variety of direct, locally focused initiatives. In December 2023, Trinity renewed asylum-seeker rapid-response grants to four local nonprofits as part of a $14.3 million grant cycle.
Trinity has also expanded its free programs for those in need of support and comfort. The church hosts a daily Compassion Meals food assistance program, as well as Compassion Markets, which offer a variety of food and home goods, every Tuesday and Thursday. In addition, Trinity has increased the number of free class offerings available at the church’s Trinity Commons center, including English language courses, workforce development seminars, youth programs, and legal workshops to ensure new arrivals to our city have the resources they need to lead fulfilling lives.
“Jesus asked his disciples to feed the hungry and welcome the stranger, and that is also our task,” said the Rev. Phillip A. Jackson, Rector of Trinity Church Wall Street. “Trinity is always seeking out the most effective and impactful ways to do good for our neighbors, our community and our city, and our increased charitable activity reflects that commitment. We are truly privileged to be able to support our community, and we look forward to continuing that necessary work.”
Other grants in the past year have helped build new affordable housing, supported at-risk students by providing afterschool activities and development programming, championed racial equity in housing, and provided legal support to tenants facing eviction.
