The Renewal Concerts
In 2023, Trinity Church Wall Street launched "Renewal"—a powerful series of concerts designed to consider some of today’s most pressing social, political, and environmental issues through music.
“At Trinity, we are always grappling with how to aim for a better world,” said Melissa Baker, Trinity’s Director of Artistic Planning, at the October 15 debut. “Music can help us do that.”
The first Renewal concert, “Mending a Broken System,” considered issues of prison reform and social justice in a program that included works by incarcerated composers from Sing Sing Correctional Facility. In the second concert, “Transcendence,” Trinity’s new music orchestra NOVUS NY presented Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps and author Richard Powers narrated with excerpts from his book Orfeo. And in “The Sound of a New World”, the third in the series, Sandbox Percussion and NOVUS NY performed Viet Cuong’s Re(new)al as well as Jessica Meyer’s A Passage Between Earth and Sky and the collaborative eco-cantata A Forest Unfolding.
