A Letter from Father Phil: Finding Community in a Divided Season

Father Phil Jackson in conversation at a Trinity Talks event in New York City

Dear Trinity Family,

As we approach this year’s election, Americans of all political persuasions are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and isolated — hesitant to talk to friends, or even our own families. An epidemic of loneliness is exacerbated.

As followers of Jesus, we know the antidote to division — and, even deeper, fear — is not being on the right side of an argument. It’s not having the most information or influence, or even winning an election. The only thing that drives out fear is the love of God in Christ. This love is eternal and transcends the political divides of our times.

The patience required for navigating these fraught times isn’t always easy to summon, but it’s the kind of love God asks us to embody — seeing one another not as enemies, but as friends. Love brings us together in a common identity.

God asks us to see one another not as enemies, but as friends.”

This fall at Trinity Church we’re offering a special series of free programs to help us remember that each of us is made in the image and likeness of God.

Sundays in October and November, our new Discovery faith education series will show us what it means to love across conflict. I hope you’ll join us — I’ll be speaking on November 10.

In addition, we invite you to find respite from this contentious season through music and contemplation. Join us for a production of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, featuring the Trinity Youth Chorus and NOVUS, on November 3 or attend our Election Prayer Vigils at St. Paul’s Chapel from Monday, November 4, through Wednesday, November 6.

As we approach Election Day, remember who you are. Remember who we are. The gospel — the good news of God’s love for the world — is good news for all of us. That’s our narrative. Together let’s release the fear that divides us.

Blessings,

Phil
