Five Ways Into Sunday’s Scripture
PSALM 8:3–9
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Our Psalm for this Sunday reverberates with the wonder of God’s creation and the astounding reminder that we, each one of us, are seen, known, and cared for by God. We are a part of a larger story and called to steward the world we share together. —Summerlee Staten
THEOLOGY
For a video meditation on Psalm 8, check out the Bible Project’s theological interpretation.
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Psalm 8 reminds us of the Christian call to environmental justice. Consider John Kempf’s quest towards Regenerative Agriculture: An Amish Farmer’s Quest to Heal the Land.
ART
Like Psalm 8, Psalm 104 rhapsodizes on the beauty of creation. See here the art of Barbara Wolff, who explores the visual imagery of the Creation Psalms.
POETRY
Maya Angelou considers Psalm 8.
MUSIC
The Choir of Westminster Abbey on Psalm 8.
